Toyota May Be Developing A Corolla-Based Pickup For The US

Rumor /10 Comments

It won't arrive until 2027, however.

A new rumor suggests that Toyota wants to capitalize on the compact pickup truck segment. The segment is already booming, thanks to theFord Maverickand Hyundai Santa Cruz.

According to some unsubstantiated information uncovered byAutomotive News, the Japanese company is reportedly considering building a Corolla-based pickup to join the segment. Supposedly it will be built alongside the regular Corolla in Mississippi, though it won't arrive until 2027 at the earliest. But we don't expect it to be based on the Corolla hatch, but perhaps the Corolla Cross, which means it could look like the renders below.

We wouldn't be surprised if this rumor is true, mainly because we've heard a similar rumor about anew model called the Toyota Stout

Many other automakers are currently considering releasing compact trucks here, considering the success of the Ford Maverick and, to a lesser extent, the Santa Cruz.

The most likely addition in the coming months with be the recently unveiled Ram Rampage, built in Brazil. It's very much a competitor to the Maverick and would most likely start stealing sales as soonas itarrives in the USA.也有朗姆酒ors that General Motors isbenchmarking the Maverick, so we can expect a rival from it, too.

If Toyota does jump into the fray, it will be a few years behind, though it would have the advantage of studying the competition to see what it should and shouldn't do.

The Maverick managed to outsell the Santa Cruztwo to one last year, and it will likely do the same this year. This success may come from Ford's established truck dominance in the US, be we also think it has to do with the Maverick's price, engine options, and overall design.

It may be a unibody vehicle, but when you see one, it is unmistakably a truck and is therefore more approachable by truck owners than the Santa Cruz. If Toyota joins the fray, we hope it can find a design that appeals to truck buyers while also exuding its unique Toyota flavor.
