Toyota Launches Upgraded GR Supra GT4 Evo For 2023 Racing Season

Despite criticisms about how much it shares with the BMW Z4 and the arrival of the new Nissan Z, theToyota GR Supraremains a cracking sports car. This year, it got even better with the long-awaited arrival of amanual transmission for the 3.0-liter models, making it an even more engaging partner.

As great as it is to drive on normal roads, the GR Supra has also enjoyed considerable racing success with over 100 podium finishes since its first racing season in 2020. In August, the Supra celebrated its 50th class win in a major championship. Toyota Gazoo Racing doesn't want to get complacent, though, and has now revealed an updated GR Supra GT4 Evo race car for the 2023 season.

Its braking, handling, and engine performance have all been enhanced, making it ready to do battle with theNissan Z GT4.

Toyota Gazoo Racing turned to user feedback and customer requests in the development of the GT4 Evo, and that led to the improvements. To start, the 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine has better power and an optimized torque curve. With better cooling, the company says that customers can now attain faster lap times. Although maximum horsepower depends on the balance of performance - Toyota GR provides power sticks - we do know that torque is as much as 487 lb-ft. By comparison, the road-going Supra makes just 368 lb-ft.

For the brakes, Toyota has implemented new ABS settings; the Brembo system has six-piston racing calipers in front and four-piston calipers at the back.

So it goes and stops as well as it ever has, but what about handling? The new GT4 Evo has the latest kW damper technology and a new anti-roll bar specification.
