This Second-Gen Toyota MR2 Is Hiding A Big German Secret

Video /5 Comments

Something mightier than the original four-cylinder powers this mid-engined sports car.

When it comes to vehicle tuning, Toyota has always been favored. Its wide array of relatively affordable performance cars are equipped with reliable powertrains, all able to take the stresses of more power and increased performance. The2JZ inline-six motoris known for its strength, able to take copious amounts of torture while still running stock internals.

But that simply wouldn't do for the owner of this second-generation MR2. Seemingly taking his inspiration from the latestGR Supra, he decided only German power would do for his mid-engined sports car. Underneath the mostly standard exterior beats the heart of an Audi, in particular, a 4.2-liter V8 from the A6 Allroad, replete with a supercharger.

Finished in an attractive metallic blue paint job, the '90s Toyota glistens in the sun. Eagle-eyed readers will note the bodywork does differ slightly from the original car. Owner Marty Sweatt had to lengthen the compact two-door's wheelbase by over 10 inches to accommodate its new powertrain. The car sits on demure Audi five-spoke wheels.

被称为“台风”,V8-powered MR2确定ly lives up to its name, delivering an almighty bellow from its powerful 4.2-liter engine. Sweatt doesn't know how much power his creation produces but estimates it to be around the 400-horsepower mark. Incredibly, the owner has been busy with his MR2 for nearly four years, experimenting slowly in order to make it the ideal weekend cruiser.

In keeping with the laid-back persona, the V8 is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission from an Audi 5000. Other than the lengthened body and the tasteful new color, the original engine cover has been replaced with an aftermarket item. LED headlights also hide beneath the delightful pop-up covers. But it's inside where the MR2 has received the most revisions, with several nifty features added to the compact interior.

Essentially, a host of key gauges sit in front of the passenger, measuring temperature, oil pressure, and boost. The seats have also been retrimmed, now sporting black and blue leather upholstery. What's more, they're power-operated, too. Sited on the roof are three bespoke features, including switches for an engine bay light and electrically folding side mirrors. It appears this MR2 has no specific purpose (outright performance or handling, for example) other than making its owner very happy. For that reason, we absolutely love it.

MR2 engine swaps aren't uncommon, with myriad owners electing to trade the stock motor for something else. This is the first time we've seen a V8, though, with thrill-seekers often choosing something smaller, such as a turbocharged K20 Honda engine - as seen inthis incredible 1,200-hp example. But if modified MR2s are not your cup of tea, you'll be pleased to know there are a few pristine examples still floating about. Based in Ireland, thisfirst-gen model is up for grabs, at $43,600.
