This Porsche 911 Turbo S Safety Car Looks Spectacular

It really doesn't matter the motor racing series, safety cars look awesome. Formula 1's previous two safety cars, theAston Martin Vantageand Mercedes-AMG GT, both came from automakers that have teams in the series. Though Porsche does not operate an F1 team, the company recently showed off aTaycan Turbo S safety car for Formula E. Porsche has once again revealed a new safety car, this time for the PIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

The2022 Porsche 911 TurboS (992 generation) takes over for theoutgoing 991 modelthat previously held the role as the WEC safety car. This new 911 will make its debut in Sebring, Florida when the 2022 season kicks off. With 650 horsepower and a 2.7-second 0-60-mph time, the Turbo S seems perfect for the job.

To operate as a safety car, the 911 is equipped with data and transmission technology plus a lighting signal system mounted on the roof. "The large LED element on the roof flashes amber when the safety car is operating. If necessary, we can switch the middle section to green," explains Adam Kot, the man responsible for the running and maintaining the two safety cars. Green signifies that cars behind may overtake the safety car until the lead car is directly behind. The controls for the lighting system, which can also communicate flag signals, are located in the front trunk.

The 992 will retain the familiar black and red livery from the previous car; even the decal locations remain the same. Underneath, the 911 gets some subtle suspension tweaks to handle the race track. "The cars don't clock up many kilometers," Kot clarifies. "On average, the cars cover about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) a year. We don't have to do much in terms of maintenance: refuel, check the tires and brakes - that's it."
