Tesla Has Already Hit 2021 Production Numbers

Tesla continues to outsell itself at a rapid pace.

Tesla announced its third-quarter earnings this weekend and there's both some good and bad to be found in the automaker's financials. On the one hand, Telsa produced 365,923 cars, with its figures continuing to show that Tesla's introduction ofthe Model 3 has paid off. The vast majority of cars sold fell into thecheaper side of Tesla's lineup, with cars like theModel Sselling at a far less aggressive rate.

On the other hand, Tesla says it still fell short of its estimates. While many sectors have begun to stabilize following a rash of supply shortages, Tesla and others in the industry are still struggling.

However, with some 928,000 cars built this year, Tesla has almost made as many cars in 2022 then it did in all of 2021 when it produced 930,422 cars.

Tesla said that while it produced almost 366,000 cars, it was only able to deliver 343,830 of them. And there's a good reason why.

Tesla revealed that "historically, our delivery volumes have skewed towards the end of each quarter due to regional batch building of cars. As our production volumes continue to grow, it is becoming increasingly challenging to secure vehicle transportation capacity and at a reasonable cost during these peak logistics weeks."

In short, physically moving cars from one location to another is challenging and expensive right now.

However, Tesla has noted that at the end of the quarter, there was an increase in the number of cars the Texas-based company has in transit. Odds are, the majority of these were Model 3s and Ys, simply because the pair outsells the other half of Tesla's lineup by a good margin.

Tesla sold 19,935 Model S and Model X units in Q3 2022. But it sold 345,988 Model Y and Model 3 units in the same timeframe. Weirdly, when revealing production data, Tesla lumps S and X models together, and 3 and Y models together so we never know the exact numbers of each model.

Tesla

On the whole, numbers are up for Tesla across the board. 305,407 cars were produced in Q1, with 258,580 being built in Q2 2022. Compared to Q3 last year, Tesla has grown massively. It only made 237,823 cars this time last year.

We should note some mitigating circumstances. In the last two quarters of the year, Tesla, like many other brands, cited production slowdowns from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in addition to the temporary closure of its Shanghai factory after a surge in Covid-19 cases. Tesla also said in its release that it will be posting its financial results for this quarter on October 19.
