So says the WRX project manager.

The fourth-generation Subaru WRX STI has just been unveiled. It will soon arrive in showrooms, yet already there's talk about making it even more powerful. It's a nice idea and all, but according to WRX project manager Masuo Takatsu that turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer four really can't get any better. In a recent interview, Takatsu stated that he and his team "realized that we have sort of reached the peak...the highest point," regarding the engine.

Some STI enthusiasts will rightly point out this newest model isn't as powerful as they would've liked to see, but Takatsu reiterated that the car is still a big step forward: "With the chassis and the previous body, we weren't able to use the full potential of the engine, so we believe with the new STI we are enhancing the body structure and chassis to (properly) use the engine power." What hasn't been ruled out for future models, however, is the possible use of a twin-turbo or even a hybrid-assist system. During testing, Subaru engineers even pitted the new WRX STI against the likes of the Porsche 911 and BMW M3 in order to perfect its performance credentials.
