Just how capable will it be?
A week ago, Subaruposted a cryptic teaser, saying that a new product reveal "packed with functional technology and rugged features" was imminent. The image showed a mountainous landscape, with a car positioned at the bottom, barely occupying a few pixels in the shot. Subaru said the product reveal would occur on March 30, which is only a week away, but the company has posted an even more revealing teaser today.
This latest picture confirms what we expected; the reveal will be a new version of the popular2021 Subaru Outback. Based onleaked internal documents, the car will be called the Outback Wilderness and boast greater off-road capability than the standard model.
斯巴鲁hasn't officially confirmed the "Wilderness" nameplate but says this new model will be an "adventure-ready version" of the Outback. In an official statement, the automaker asks, "the legendary Outback is the most rugged, most capable vehicle in the Subaru lineup. But what if Subaru pushed things further? Or went higher?"
The single teaser image shows a sporty back wheel wrapped in what appears to be a Yokohama tire. We can clearly spot the Outback's signature body cladding, now with an orange "Outback" emblem that is likely the Wilderness model's accent color, much like how theOnyx Edition gets lime green. The car in the image wears what looks like a new navy blue color that isn't currently available on the Outback.
"Get ready to take your adventures to the next level in a new kind of Outback with even more capability and off-road features," Subaru adds. We imagine these features include a higher ride height, chunkier tires, and improved driver aid systems for off-roading. The Outback Wilderness isn't likely to worry Jeep Wrangler owners, but perhaps it will compare favorably to a Jeep Compass or Ford Bronco Sport.
