Someone Paid $400k For One Of The First Tesla Cybertrucks Ever Made

We expected it to sell for considerably more, to be honest.

One of the first-everTesla Cybertruckpickups was recently sold at the 29th Petersen Museum Auction Gala for $400,000.

Tesla fan Greggertruck shared a clip of the auction, which shows some rather spirited bidding going on. In the short video, the auctioneer can be heard taking bids, which was at $280,000 at the time. Clearly, some attendees were overly excited at the prospect of owning a Cybertruck, with one bidder's paddle being ripped out of his hand mid-auction.

While $400,000 is way more than the Cybertruckwill cost when it arrives, we're surprised the electric truck didn't attract a higher sale price. It's easily one of the most anticipated vehicles in recent years, withreservations totaling nearly two million in July.

Then again, the Cybertruck sold at the Petersen Museum Auction isn't the first-ever production model with VIN 001.

The invitation to the event described the Cybertruck as a low-VIN example and said the winning bidder would be "one of the first" to own the angular pickup truck. We're convinced that if this model had the desirable VIN 001, it would have sold for considerably more - perhaps even $1 million.

Take the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, for example. The first-ever example sold for a whopping $2.5 million in 2021, more than20 times the regular list price. While that sounds ridiculous, all the proceeds went to charity, so everyone wins. Curiously, the Hummer EV SUV sold for justhalf a million dollarslast year.

VIN 001 of the Corvette E-Rayalso managed to achieve an astonishing sale price of $1.1 million when it was auctioned off at the Barrett Jackson Palm Beach auction earlier this year.

The event attracted monied gearheads, with a single seat priced at $1,750. If you wanted all your friends to come with you, entire tables were available for $17,500. A Premier option was also available for a staggering $30,000. Aside from the auction, the evening included a cocktail reception, dinner, and entertainment. Legendary car collector and all-around good guy Jay Leno served as the host for the evening.

If everything goes as planned, the winning bidder should receive their Cybertruck before the end of the year. An early report said the electric truck wouldenter production at the end of 2023, but Tesla says mass productionwill commence in early 2024.

Tesla's first-ever truck will be offered with thehigh-powered tri-motor setupfound in the Model X and Model S Plaid vehicles. We'd be surprised if the automaker unleashes the full 1,020 hp capability, but weexpect it to be speedy.
