Saab's Spiritual Successor Takes One Step Closer To Reality

The spirit of Saab may return for the EV era.

When Saab went bust in 2011, many were saddened by thedemise of the GM-owned automaker. However, there was hope that the brand's spirit would be revived by the NEVS Emily GT,a sleek electric performance sedandeveloped by former Saab engineers.

That's finally happening, thanks to an unknown investor who believes in the project. Speaking to a NEVS insider, Sweden'sAuto Motor und Sportreports that a secret backer has signed a letter of intent to purchase the Emily and Pons project. The agreement stipulates that both vehicles will be further developed and eventually manufactured in Saab's hometown of Trollhattan.

According to the report, the deal is yet to be finalized and is expected to reach the final stages sometime in August.

At this stage, it's unclear what brand the NEVS Emily GT will be sold under, but it would be great to see the Saab name make a return. Even if they're marketed under a different name, the people of Trollhattan will undoubtedly be delighted to see the spirit of Saab live on in a desirable EV.

And that's not undeserving praise. The Emily GT has been lavished with compliments by the motoring press, who are impressed by its remarkable comfort, refinement, and driving characteristics. Designed to take on thePorsche Taycan, the Emily GT is equipped withfourelectric motors - each producing 120 horsepower - for a total of 480 hp.

The latest prototypes can reach 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, but there are plans to introduce an even faster variant with 653 hp and an incredible 1,622 lb-ft of torque. NEVS targets a 0 to 62 mph dash of 3.2 seconds with this model.

The Emily GT has a proper torque vectoring system with an electric motor dedicated to each wheel. Peter Dahl, a Saab veteran and head of development for the Emily GT, likens the grand tourer's dynamic capabilities to "changing from straight slalom skis to carving skis."

It was beginning to look like the NEVS Emily GT would never see production. Earlier this year, the company announced it would be going into "hibernation," with a note on the official website reading, "We are closing down our product development activities on April 2023 due to the hibernation plan the company is currently going through."

Expect more details to be released in the coming months. We're just delighted to know the Saab 9-5 and 9000 will get the successor they deserve.
