Rolls-Royce Wants More Bespoke Coachbuild Projects

The Boat Tail isn't the only one-off custom the British marque has planned.

Rolls-Royce has no shortage of luxury offerings, but as always, there are those that wish to stand out in ways that a "regular" Rolls just can't. Even the excellentPhantom, as fantastic as it is, is just vanilla for some. Hence, when the British carmaker decided to create a coachbuilt piece of artcalled the Boat Tail, selling it to the rich and famouswas easily achieved. Along with the car, customers also got an incredibly expensive andhighly detailed timepiece to match. With each example of the car costing $28 million, this custom creation is a serious moneymaker. So it shouldn't be a surprise to learn that Rolls wants to make more.

According to reports, Rolls wants to release a new car from its Coachbuild division every two years, but of course, only if there is demand from buyers and an "appetite" from within the company. CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos, says, "Sweptail was a one-off与一个特定的客户端和收到一封unbelievable reception. We had a lot of inquiries from our clients if they would be picked to join the next Coachbuild project. We did that four years ago and, while doing that, ramped up the department. Our idea is to maybe do one project every second year. Whether it's three cars or one car will hinge very much on the idea of the clients and also on our appetite for doing it."

But don't think that all you need is a big bank balance. Rolls-Royce's finances are looking pretty good, and the firm is in a "very comfortable position", so it can pick which customers to work with on future Coachbuild projects. Naturally, picking and choosing also help to keep these projects rare and special. Rather, Rolls wants generations of the future to look back in a century from now and say, "Wow, that was something special, or significant" and that won't happen if just any customer's requests are granted. So expect RR to churn out more of its bread-and-butter models for a long time, but know that when the Coachbuild division gets involved, it will be for something spectacular.
