The towing functions have been made easier to use for drivers.

TheR1 Series has proved its towing prowesson various terrains, with the R1T pickup truck backed by a towing capacity of 11,000 lbs - besting the likes of theFord F-150 Lightningand GMC Hummer EV. Despite having the bragging rights, Rivian doesn't want to be complacent, and this new update shows us just that.

The new OTA.38 update focuses on improving the towing capabilities of theR1Tand R1S. The towing upgrade package includes better range prediction, off-road towing, and user interface (UI) changes.

Within the redesigned Drive Modes app, the new 'Trailer' tab enables the EV to sense the weight and aerodynamics of what's in tow and calculate the range. The more the drivers tow, the more accurate the range prediction will be as continuous learning is integrated into the range estimated algorithm.

The towing capability extends to off-road drive modes, including Snow, All-Terrain, and Rock Crawl (exclusive to the quad-motor R1 vehicles) modes. It has also been extended to the Soft Sand mode, a drive mode recently madeavailable in the Performance dual-motorAWD variants.

As for the UI update, the infotainment screen is added with the Gauge View available in each drive mode. It provides real-time information on vehicle data such as battery, motor temperature, and steering angle. The information adapts depending on the chosen drive mode. For example, pitch and roll gauges are used in off-road modes.

Choosing a drive mode is now easier as the settings have been relocated to the left side of the screen. Rivian also introduced flicking gestures that improve accessibility. Once the driver has chosen a drive mode, the screen can display a view of the truck bed to monitor the object being towed.

With these updates, owners should have more confidence to take their R1 EVs for towing - just don't tow way past the rated capacity like theR1T that pulled heavy machineryout of a ditch. Not only would it damage the powertrain components, but it would also void warranties.
