Porsche Begins Testing The First 911 Hybrid

With theTaycan currently outselling the 718 and 911combined, Porsche proved that an electric car could deliver a compelling sports car experience, just as the Cayenne did for SUVs. An all-electric 911 still feels years away, though a hybrid model could come sooner than we expected. As you probably know,911 Hybrid rumorshave been floating around for years, but we finally have concrete proof that Porsche is working on it.

Autocar recently spotted a2022 Porsche 911 Turboprototype on the Nurburgring, wearing a telltale yellow sticker. A yellow sticker is required for all hybrid test vehicles in Germany, meaning this is definitely an early hybrid test mule. Sadly, our spy photographers missed the car's test session, so we hope to have our own photos soon.

Fortunately, the hybrid prototype didn't look much different than a standard 911 Turbo. The all-black car wore no special camouflage, save for blacked-out rear windows likely to hide unfinished wiring for the batteries. Porsche has previously hinted that the 992 generation 911 was built to accept hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

We still know very little about the drivetrain, but Porsche promises the hybrid will be among the highest-performing 911 models in the range, even above the existing turbo. The current 911 Turbo produces 572 horsepower (640 hp in the Turbo S), so the hybrid version might approach 700 hp.
