We've come to rely on airbags saving lives and preventing serious injuries for many years now, so the technology isn't exactly new. However,Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has just issued a voluntary recallfor more than 1.25 millionRam pickup trucksfor a software bug that may prevent the side-curtain airbags from deploying. The affected trucks include certain versions of the 2013-2016 Ram 1500and 2500, and 2014-2016 Ram 3500, all of which feature what's called roll-state sensing.
A software coding error, potentially caused by external stimuli, may incorrectly determine that this sensor has failed if there's a "significant underbody impact." If so, the deployment of both the side airbags and seat belt pretensioners could be disabled. Both of these safety features "would then be unavailable in the event of a vehicle rollover." Fortunately, this can problem can be easily fixed with a software refresh. However, FCA claims it has already identified two crashes, one of which was fatal, that could potentially be related to this software error. Affected owners in the US, Canada and Mexico will be notified by FCA beginning next month.
