Nissan Z Nismo Gets Ridiculous $90k Markup

Pricing /23 Comments

The unfortunate dealer markup saga continues.

A Nissan dealership in El Monte, California, was found to have marked up aNissan Z Nismoto a ludicrous $158,495. That's a whopping $89,995 over the $68,500 manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for the slightly spicier version of the 2024 Nissan Z.

While this sounds like an early April Fool's joke,The Drive, who contacted the dealership selling the massively overly priced Z Nismo, confirmed this is real. Optional bits and pieces fitted on the car are the Stealth Grey/Super Black two-tone paint job for $1,295, an illuminated black metallic kick plate priced at $500, and a $210 scuff protection pack for the interior.

Regardless of those options, it doesn't warrant the immense markup. So, as one would expect, the car-buying public, particularly The New Nissan Z group on Facebook, picked up their pitchforks. The worst part is that Ali Hassan, who posted this on the group, shared in the comments section that the dealer has decided to double down and increase the markup to $90k instead. This was after the dealer allegedly rejected an offer $40k above MRSP.

To somewhat justify this unfortunate continuation of themarkup saga, the dealer made it sound that the car in question is a "low production - high demand vehicle and as such it is being sold at a premium price." This is the exact same quote found on a "contract" sheet provided by the erring dealer, who fails to publish the price on their weblisting of the car.

Obviously, that isn't the real reason for the markup, as the dealer might be doing this to probe market interest for the vehicle. To put it bluntly, it's hoping to hit it big with an overly enthusiastic buyer.

This, of course, sounds scummy, and even company executives know they need to stop it. Earlier in the year, Volkswagen North America's CEO Pablo Di Si said the companycould not afford dealer markupsfor the ID. Buzz. Ford has likewise reported that it will drop the hammer on dealer markups by 2024. The Blue Oval company's CEO, Jim Farley, suggested a fixed pricing arrangementin 2022.

With all this said, car buyers would do well to avoid the shameless money-grubbing behavior of car dealerships. Buying a vehicle with such an inflated price tag will only enable this further, so no matter how deep your pockets are or how enticing the car is, avoid such markups like the plague.
