Nissan GT-R R35 Designer Helps Craft Cutting-Edge Electric Vehicle Concept

The concept car will debut at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.

Japanese firm, THK, has unveiled an electric vehicle concept car called LSR-5 at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. The company predominantly handles the production of various mechanical components for cars and the concept showcases its latest innovations.

Despite not having experience in making actual automobiles, THK's EV concept was developed in-house. The LSR-5 name comes from the initials of "luxury, sport, and revolution," with the number 5 as a note to the brand's 50th anniversary.

The crossover coupe is a four-seater designed by the independent studio SN Design Platform, headed by former Nissan chief designer, Shiro Nakamura, best known for his work with the R35 generationGT-Rsports coupe.

In keeping with Nakamura-san's previous comments about modern EVs beingtoo aggressively designed, the LSR-5 concept's exterior is modern and sleek, with a sloping roofline and a clean side profile with sculpted fenders.

The front looks similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 but with a full-width LED strip like the Kona EV and a bumper designed to channel air away from the nose. At the back, the full-width lighting elements continue with a Kamm-tail design, with the LEDs angling downwards toward the vehicle's rear quarter panels that terminate near its angular rear bumper.

The concept looks like an interpretation of Nakamura-san's recent creation, the AIM EV Sport 01, an EV coupe that debuted at this year's Goodwood FOS. In contrast, the LSR-5 hasn't implemented Nissan's currentradical design languagefor its concept cars.

As for its dimensions, the LSR-5 measures 196.7 inches long, 77.4 inches wide, and 60.2 inches tall, which is very similar to that of a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, though the concept is still about 4.7 inches taller.

Inside, the LSR-5 has a four-seater cabin with a "stealth seat slide system," which allows a completely flat floor configuration. It also features wood trim on the dashboard and door cards. Aside from this, the concept gets a digital display that stretches the full width of the dashboard, acting as the infotainment system and digital instrument cluster.

The THK LSR-5 has an 800V electric powertrain with two variable magnetic flux-in-wheel motors at the back, each producing 125 horsepower. Meanwhile, the front gets a single electric motor that produces 295 hp. No combined power output was claimed. The concept also has four-wheel-steering, electric brakes, and an active suspension system utilizing the brand's MR fluid active damper tube.

The THK LSR-5 might not reach full production, as with most concept cars, but it does showcase what the company can do with its current technology.
