New MG Cyberster Electric Roadster Coming With Yoke Steering Wheel

Teaser /9 Comments

It makes an MX-5 look quite ordinary but will it be as good to drive?

British automaker MG wants to pull off the (almost) impossible by developing a lightweight, fun-to-drive roadster that runs on electric power alone. It's a tough ask considering the weight of battery packs, but the electric MG Cyberster is happening. We saw it in somefuturistic design sketchesback in 2020, and it was no less jaw-dropping whenrevealed in concept format the Auto Shanghai Show last year. WithLamborghini-like scissor doors, MG has now teased what looks to be the production-bound Cyberster in a new video. Not only do those doors appear to make it onto the production model, but there are several other surprises too.

We hope that the Cyberster is more up to date than the teaser video itself, which was shared in 240p resolution. Nevertheless, the somewhat grainy footage showed that the Cyberster will have a fabric roof that folds electrically, quite substantial overhangs with a long, tapering nose, and a restrained ducktail-type rear spoiler. The rear lighting signature - inspired by the Union Jack and linking the MG to its British heritage - is one of the most dramatic features, along with those upward-swinging doors. This particular model was finished in an attractive red with glossy black detailing on the wheels and vents.

Inside, there are sporty two-tone seats and one striking feature that Tesla owners will be familiar with: ayoke steering wheel. Both the two-tone seats and steering wheel were seen on the concept. MG captioned the teaser post with the text "return of the legend", suggesting that a different name will be used in place of Cyberster, and this will perhaps hark back to a roadster like the MG TF or MGB.

Touted as aMazda MX-5 Miatarival, the MG Cyberster not only looks a lot more extreme but will be far quicker, too. The concept is said to have a 500-mile range and a 0-60 time of under three seconds. That's impressive on paper, but MG will need to keep the price down and the driving experience as authentic as possible for it to conquer the Japanese legend. Based on this latest teaser, a full reveal appears to be imminent.
