New Jeep Wrangler May Receive A Beastly New Four-Cylinder

Rumor /29 Comments

This will be the most powerful Wrangler ever.

FCA is preparing a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will likely see use in the next Jeep Wrangler. and produce around 300 horsepower. That is a fair bit more than the current 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower. In April, FCA announced that it would invest $75 million in its Trenton Engine Complex, south of Detroit. This investment would allow the company to build the new four-cylinder where the Pentastar V6 is currently built. The Pentastar has been an award winning engine, but it's time for something fresh.

This new 2.0-liter, codenamed Hurricane, will feature direct-injection with variable valve timing and a twin-scroll turbocharger. Despite the high horsepower, this engine may actually slot in the Wrangler lineup as the fuel-saving option.FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne has hinted that the Wrangler would be getting an optional four-cylindertopair to a new eight-speed automatic. This will probably get better mpg than the current V6 and five-speed automatic combination that yields just 17 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. We're pretty stoked to hear that the Wrangler will be getting 300 hp, but we hope that FCA will keep the legendary reliability.
