Mitsubishi's New Off-Road Concepts Are EXACTLY What We Want

You'll probably recognize only two of the seven vehicles Mitsu's bringing to the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon.

TheTokyo Auto Salonis just around the corner, offering Japan's many automakers and tuners the chance to show off their customized rides. And Mitsubishi, for one, is not about to sit this one out.

The Diamond-Star automaker is heading to the Makuhari Messe with no less than seven modified vehicles of different sizes, but all of them taller than your average passenger car. And while most of them are based on JDM models we don't get on this side of the Pacific, two of them seek to improve on crossovers with which the North American market is intimately familiar.

Pictured in red, for example, is theEclipse Cross周末的探险家。它是基于crosso紧凑ver we get here in America, but jacked up on an adjustable lift kit from Air Force Suspension Japan and fitted with Rays M9 alloys and Toyo Open Country off-road tires. It also packs upgraded navigation and weather-report systems for safely venturing off the proverbial beaten path.

It's joined by a specialOutlander PHEVoutfitted for the NERV disaster-prevention agency with a giant mobile satellite antenna on the roof, special graphics, and upgraded wheels wrapped in the same off-road tires as the aforementioned Eclipse Cross.

The rest of Mitsubishi's "Drive Your Ambition" display at the Tokyo salon is made up of models that are entirely foreign to us, but evidently integral to the Japanese automaker's domestic lineup. There's a modified eK Cross that takes the "Cute Beast" into "Wild Beast" territory with a Tonka-style yellow paintjob, a black-and-gray camouflaged roof, and those same Toyo tires. It's joined as well by two different takes on theDelica D:5 minivan– one outfitted for New Zealand's All Blacks rugby team, and another in a rather utilitarian but fetching shade of pale matte green. And there'll be two "new light super height wagons" that are still to be revealed.
