Mercedes-Benz is one car manufacturer that always pushes the boundaries ofnew vehicle tech. Its rapid expansion into the world ofelectric vehiclesis seriously impressive, and with its latest offering, theEQA, which is basically an electrified Mercedes-Benz GLA, the company is clearly moving in a new and exciting direction. Not only is the launch of cleaner and more efficient cars important to the brand, but so are the services that run in the background to keep its cars on the road. Mercedes-Benz is now expanding its capability to keep in-vehicle programs up to date via over the air updates. The company describes it as "updates that turn into upgrades".

Back in 2016, you would require a DVD or a workshop visit to update the navigation maps on yourMercedes-Benz E-Class. Now everything is done via over-the-air (OTA) updates every three months. These days owners are notified by a message shown in the central display and simply agree to the update to proceed to the installation. Mercedes-Benz uses mobile radio technology and the communication module installed in the vehicle for secure updates.

The Mercedes me Store offers even more options, including smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The MBUX infotainment system found in all modern Benz models uses a hybrid system of stored data and online updates to offer a seamless user experience.

A constant flow of information is transferred to Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including the latest traffic and weather information, and older models are able to upgrade to the latest MBUX operating software in certain circumstances. "With 'over the air', it is not just software updates that we can deliver to vehicles already sold, but also features which haven't even been invented yet. OTA enables the vehicle to become a more and more effective tool for the customer as time goes on", says Georges Massing, Head of Digital Vehicle & Mobility at Mercedes-Benz AG. Can we please just get human brain updates already?
