Schiemer lasted just two years in the position.
Mercedes-Benz is making some serious personnel changes, and the big one is the replacement of Mercedes-AMG CEO and head of Top End Vehicle group Phillip Schiemer by Michael Schiebe, currently the Chief of Staff to the CEO of Mercedes-Benz group AG, Ola Kallenius. Schiebe will take over the role of AMG boss on March 1st, and will report to Markus Schaefer, Chief Technology Officer.
Schiemer will then take up a new position at the company leading Top End Customer and Community Management. This comes just two years after Schiemer was named the Mercedes-AMG CEO, replacingTobias Moers. Then a year later, he was given the responsibility of the entire Top End Vehicle group, leading a charge put forth by CEO Kallenius to focus on the high-margin vehicles toboost profits.
Schiemer will start his new role on April 1st and will continue his career at the company where he has worked in various roles for the past 18 years. Notably, he was instrumental in pushing the Maybach andG-Classvehicles forward as both brands are primed for an electric rebirth in the near future.
Schiemer originally took the position after Tobias Moers left it to head up Astin Martin. Thisdid not pan out too well for him, and it seems yet again the company is mixing things up. No specific reasoning was given as to the change, with CEO Kallenius only saying that he is "very much looking forward to working with the new top management colleagues joining the Mercedes-Benz family, as well as those who are taking on new responsibilities in key positions with us."
It seems that Schiemer did do a good job of increasing top-end sales, with the segment growing significantly in Q4 by 14% over the previous year, bringing the yearly total of car sales to 83,800 units. The main drivers in this were increased sales of AMG at 28%, Maybach at 25%, and G-Class at 15%. This is all despite the fact that, overall, Mercedes sales were down 1% from what they were in 2021.
The move is very significant as it potentially tightens Kallenius' control over these all-important vehicle sales. Right now his divisions are coming off very good years, so it is surprising to see such a move like this. Perhaps he is expecting more out of them, or maybe it's because he desires a little more oversight and control by putting one of his own men in the position. Whatever the reason, Mercedes's top-end sales have a bright year ahead of them with vehicles like the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV coming soon andAMG One hypercars finally being delivered.
