Mazda 3, CX-30, And CX-5 Get New Retro Sports Editions

Mazda has a knack for infusing even its cheaper models with a premium feel.

Mazda has released a Retro Sports Edition of multiple models in Japan, with some of the most tasteful enhancements we've seen in a cosmetic package. The package is available on the Mazda 3 Hatchback,Mazda 3 Sedan, Mazda CX-30, andMazda CX-5.

Mazda wanted to create the effect of a "retro custom car" with this package, while the interiors are said to evoke tasteful hobby rooms for adults.

Outside, the models are finished in Zircon Sand Metallic. Mazda chose the same color for theCarbon Turbo Packageavailable on certain models in the USA. For the Retro Sports Edition models, this paint is contrasted by glossy black elements on the grille, side mirrors, and wheels. It works well with the clean, unfussy lines of Mazda's Kodo design language, inspired by Japanese aesthetics.

Inside, Mazda has gone beyond the normal styling package upgrades to create interiors that are quite premium. The two-tone Terracotta and black color scheme gives the interior an upscale cigar lounge kind of feel. A suede-like Legane fabric is used for the seats and the dashboard, while the Terracotta stitching adorns the black center console and door panels. Even Mazda's base models are built to a higher standard than most competitors, and the Retro Sports Edition builds on that attention to detail.

Based on pricing for the CX-30 in Japan, the Retro Sports Edition is the most premium model in the lineup. In hybrid guise, this special edition model is about 154,000 yen ($1,050) pricier than the next most expensive trim. Other models with the package will also cost a bit more.

It's unclear if Mazda will bring the Retro Sports Edition models to the USA, but we're used to fantastic JDM specials that remain forbidden fruit on local soil. Another example is theFairlady Z Customized Editionof the Nissan Z that was confirmed for production in Japan last month.

Mazda took its premium aspirations to a new level with the recent launch of the three-row CX-90, a vehicle that would have been perfect for the Retro Sports Edition touches. Wedrove the plug-in hybrid versionof the CX-90 recently and praised its refined interior.
