Mad Mike Whiddett Schools Max Verstappen In The Art Of Drifting

Video /Comments

Max had never tried to hold a slide before this, yet his car control skills have already taught him all he needed to know.

Being part of the Red Bull family has several perks and for two-time F1 World Champion Max Verstappen, those perks including being taught how to drift by Kiwi lunatic and pro drifter Mad Mike Whiddett. And in the iconic MADBUL, no less, a car that Mike had never let anyone else slide before the below video was shot.

As you might know, Mad Mike is a big fan of Mazdas androtary engines. He has a custom-builtMazda 3with a 1,400-horsepower rotary enginebuilt for Pikes Peakearlier this year, several RX-7s, an RX-8, and even a rotary-swapped Miata.

But to teach Verstappen the noble art of drifting, Mike brought his 1992 Mazda RX-7 MADBUL. It has roughly 600 hp on tap and has won multiple championships. There's no ABS, no traction control, and no stability control. It was built to let Mike and Mike alone slay tires, and it's arguably the most-traveled drift car in the world.

With that pressure, how would Max fare?

Max first had to get to grips with the clutch and the stiff sequential shifter, both of which required a lot of force. The other thing Max had to wrap his head around was the fact that rotaries prefer to be revved hard and high, and there's no place for mechanical sympathy in the MADBUL.

Mad Mike and Verstappen start with some basic donuts around an inflatable Red Bull pyramid, and although the first attempt sees him spin out, the very next is almost flawless. Once Verstappen felt the weight transfer underneath him, he knew how to control the car.

Then it's onto the Figure 8 course to test Verstappen's ability to transition from one slide to another before his ability to initiate a slide with a Scandinavian flick is put to the test in a large circle lined with cones. Here, maintaining angle is just as important as momentum, and Max picks things up quickly.

There's another challenge, but we won't spoil the short, eight-minute clip for you.
