Lucid Air Sapphire Makes 1,234 HP, Does 205 MPH

Pricing /9 Comments

Lucid's claimed figures are VERY close to the Rimac Nevera's records.

Lucid has announced the final production specifications, performance figures, and pricing for theLucid Air Sapphire. The Sapphire is powered by Lucid's three-motor powertrain, designed and built in-house by America's other EV maker. It has one electric motor in front and a dual-motor setup at the rear. The combined power output is 1,234 hp and 1,430 lb-ft of torque.

As you can imagine, it's pretty brisk. Lucid claims a 0-60 mph time of 1.89 seconds, 0-100 mph in 3.84 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 8.95 seconds with an exit speed of 158 mph. The top speed is 205 mph. Apart from the top speed, these figures are remarkably close to therecords set by the Rimac Nevera.

美国汽车制造商还声称这是磨破ld's first fully-electric luxury super sports sedan, which is cheeky considering the Tesla Model S Plaid has been around for two years. We think the key word in that claim is "luxury," as Lucid quality is a cut above Tesla.

Oh, and the range is 427 miles, one ofthe highest in the US.

Like theNevera, the Sapphire is not just a one-trick pony. Lucid made several enhancements to help the driver keep those 1,200 horses under control. On the hardware side, it has retuned front and rear springs, bushings, anti-roll bars, bespoke Aero Sapphire wheels (20 inches in the front and 21 inches in the rear), an aluminum roof to lower the center of gravity, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires boasting a Sapphire-specific compound.

No weight figures were provided, but the dual-motor Touring already tips the scales at 5,212 pounds. The Sapphire will undoubtedly weigh more, so it was only fitting to improve the braking system. It has new carbon ceramic brakes with 420-millimeter rotors and 10-piston calipers at the front and 390-mm rotors with four-piston calipers at the rear.

Lucid also rewrote the adaptive damper, ABS, stability control, and electric power steering software. With two motors on the rear axle, Lucid also wrote newtorque vectoringcontrol algorithms.

There are four driving modes: Smooth, Swift, Sapphire, and Track. Smooth is for relaxed driving, while Swift provides a thrilling experience yet comfortable experience on swooping roads. Sapphire Mode dials it up a few notches for the ultimate on-road experience.

According to Lucid, Track Mode is strictly for track use. And you get three different track setups to choose from: Dragstrip, Hot Lap, and Endurance.

Like the Plaid, the Sapphire doesn't shout about its performance potential. The exterior has been optimized for downforce, but the most significant hints are the model-specific Sapphire Blue exterior paint combined with Lucid's Stealth Look trim.

The Sapphire is priced at $249,000, not including tax, registration, and delivery fees. You could buy two $108,490 Plaids for the price of one Sapphire, and that's bound to get the tongues wagging. We've already done abasic comparison between the two models, but Lucid will have to work extremely hard to lure people out of their Plaids, even with better luxury and build quality.
