If You Weren't Already Confused By BMW's Lineup, Get Ready For iPerformance Models

Now we have M, M-Sport, i, and iPerformance. Make it all stop!

If you can successfully remember BMW's current lineup, the we commend you. After countless name changes and newly introduced performance lineups, the BMW range has become a little difficult to make sense of. M-division cars are different than M-Sport models, and now BMW will be throwing another curveball into the mix. Starting this summer, BMW plug-in hybrid models will be called iPerformance models. This change is meant to emphasize that technology from the i sub-brand is spreading across the lineup.

This also means that the number of plug-in BMW models will increase. The first car will be the BMW 740ein standard and long-wheelbase versions. This model will be powered by a TwinPower turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor. Total output will be 326 horsepower with a 25-mile electric range. The X5 XDrive40e will also share the drivetrain. There will also be a 330e with a 2.0-liter four cylinder and a 225xe Active Tourer with a 224 horsepower 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. Are you confused yet? These cars will get an "eDrive" logo on the C-pillar, and new iPerformance models will get i badges on the sidewalls as well as lots of blue accents to help you recognize it's a plug-in.
