Hyundai N Models Will Get Carbon Fiber Wheels

Lightweight wheel specialist Dymag announced it will produce an advanced carbon hybrid wheel for the Ioniq 5 N and future Hyundai N performance cars.

Dymag, an acclaimed manufacturer of lightweight wheels, has announced that it's working with Hyundai to produce an advanced carbon hybrid wheel for the automaker's high-performance models, such as theIoniq 5 N.

Working with Hankuk Carbon, Dymag has created a rather special wheel type. The composite outer rim is made out of carbon fiber and features a "precision-machined" forged metallic centerpiece. Dymag says it has used the best bits of both materials to produce a carbon hybrid wheel between 40-50% lighter than a conventional cast aluminum wheel.

Aside from the aesthetic benefits, these featherweight rims reduce unsprung mass and rolling inertia while providing greater strength and stiffness. The prototype wheel was previewed at this year'sGoodwood Festival of Speedin a display alongside Hyundai'srecently revealed performance EV, but that's not the only place they were spotted.

"We are delighted we are working with Hyundai on developing advanced, lightweight carbon hybrid wheels for its N Performance products," said Tom de Lange, CEO of Dymag. "The first result of the collaboration between Dymag and Hankuk Carbon, the new wheel technology further cements Dymag's position as a leading OEM partner for the global automotive industry."

Dymag's lightweight carbon hybrid wheels were almost everywhere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, with several high-end manufacturers and tuners using the brand'sinnovative design on their pricey machines, including Lanzante, BAC, Gunther Werks, and more.

Multiple benefits come with carbon hybrid wheels, aside from a greater steering feel and sharper handling.

For example, the carbon hybrid design is stronger and more durable than一个full carbon wheelor a traditional alloy. Under stress, Dymag's clever wheel can bend and spring back into shape. The company currently offers carbon hybrid wheels sized between 18 to 23 inches and has plans to introduce 24- and 25-inch examples later in 2023.

As a performance electric vehicle, carbon hybrid wheels bring another advantage to the Ioniq 5 N. The weight savings can improve the driving range. While pricey carbon hybrid wheels make little sense on a run-of-the-mill EV, it's a nice little bonus on a car like the Ioniq 5 N.

While Hyundai may be the first automaker to announce a long-term collaboration with Dymag, the UK-based specialist notes it is in "advanced" discussions with several automakers regarding supplying lightweight wheels.
