Unveiled to the worldjust two months ago,现代Ioniq 6drew criticism from many due to its controversial styling. But it seems few could care about the polarizing looks. The company recently announced there's an unprecedented demand for its latest electric vehicle, with 37,446 South Korean customers placing pre-orders in a single day.

The automaker notes this is the highest number achieved in 24 hours for a Korean-built vehicle in its domestic market, surpassing the previous title-holder, the Ioniq 5, which garnered 23,760 pre-orders in the same time frame. A company official said this strong demand can be attributed to the new EV's myriad plus points.

"The innovative interior and exterior design, excellent driving range (based on world-class aerodynamic performance), and new technologies ... seem to have received a good response from customers."

These numbers also reinforce the growing popularity of battery-powered vehicles. In the United States, exorbitant gas prices have forced many to consider electric vehicles and join theever-growing EV population. Interestingly, second-quarter registration figures show Hyundai is a force to be reckoned with in the burgeoning segment.

The South Korean giant shifted nearly 7,000 vehicles in the USA during this period, many of which were the Ioniq 5. The upcoming Ioniq 6 will most certainly continue this trend, especially with the claims Hyundai is making. A dual-motor configuration will be made available, with a substantial 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque.

This will allow the Ioniq 6 to hit 62 mph in 5.1 seconds, which is quick for a family sedan. When plugged into a 350 kW DC fast charger, the company states the EV will charge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes.

Until the Ioniq 6 arrives on our shores, it's difficult to assess how far it will travel between charges. However, WLTP figures indicate a usable 379-mile range. Expect EPA estimates to be slightly lower than that. Part of that impressive range comes down to the slippery styling; Ioniq 6 cuts through the air with a drag coefficient of just 0.21.

现代claims that the single-motor Ioniq 6 has the world's highest electric consumption efficiency rate at a claimed 3.85 miles/kWh - but we'll have to wait for EPA testing to confirm how it stacks up against other EVs locally.

But the Hyundai is about so much more than the mechanical and electrical bits. The interior boasts cutting-edge side view cameras, which will likelybe replaced with conventional mirrors in the USA. Elsewhere, you'll find the cabin has been crafted with sustainable materials. Recycled plastics and sustainably treated leather can be found inside, along with some funky ambient lighting that uplifts the atmosphere.

American consumers can expect a local introduction in early 2023. It's certainly an appealing prospect, but there are plenty of strong contenders, particularly the Tesla Model 3, that it has to conquer. Pricing is yet to be announced, but we anticipate a base price of $39,000. This would undercut the aforementioned Tesla by several thousand dollars.

In the coming years, we expect the Ioniq 6 lineup to grow. Designer SangYup Lee said he'd loveto create a station wagonor shooting brake variant. "I can make a great hatchback out of that; a shooting brake," he said at the launch. More importantly, he also expressed a desire to create a high-performance N variant.

That was before Hyundai revealed a concept of the N variant,dubbed the RN22e, with 576 hp and 545 lb-ft, which should make for a hugely exciting electric vehicle.
