The boxy design remains true to the original 1996 model.
While theHonda Odysseyremains the brand's MPV offering for select global markets, two new van options have been introduced to the domestic Japanese market. The Step WGN is now available in Air and Spada guise with each trim catering to a different consumer. The brand promises that both variants offer clean design and cozy cabin spaces.
Where design is concerned, Honda explains that the Spada caters to those who want a van that feels fearless and stylish. The target audience apparently wants a product that expresses a different worldview that adapts to an adventurous lifestyle. When selected with the Premium Line option, this derivative boasts enhanced features and functions. The Air has been penned for those who wish to retain a conservative image with a bit of modernity.
When it comes to design in particular, the overall silhouette has been kept traditional with the body retaining a boxy set of proportions, as seen in itssmaller N-Box, together with a conventional touch-activated rear-sliding door. However, several dynamic cues are applied such as a set of LED headlights and taillights and alloy wheels.
In Air-guise, the design is left to be a bit sleeker with the Step WGN possessing a smaller grille cluster and less-dramatic lower bumper which leaves the foglamps separate from the lower intake. At the rear, a more commercially minded grey bumper is applied with two reflectors fitted to either end. On the Spada, a more dynamic front grille and lower intake are applied while the rear shows off a cheeky tailgate spoiler and sporty bumper.
Being a van, the interior is where the Honda Step WGN shines. Here, the company says that the family layout has been evolved to allow users to feel as if they are in the comfort of their own homes. To create a free space, sections of the seating are adjustable thanks to a series of sliding and folding rear captain seats.
The Step WGN in Air trim has been upholstered with fabric but the Spada boasts a water and oil-resistant fabric X synthetic leather material. With the Premium Line option, this is upgraded to a partial suede-like upholstery. To accommodate the driver, a conventional multifunction steering wheel is joined by an 11.4-inch HD LCD touchscreen infotainment system with Honda Connect, a digital instrument cluster, and a center console with analog buttons for climate control, driver aids, gear selection, and other operational functions. The rear rows are treated to a 15.6-inch monitor for entertainment purposes.
Powertrain details are lacking for the time being but Honda confirms that the Step WGN range will be driven by a variation of its e:HEV system. This will consist of a petrol-electric combination that it promises will deliver relaxed acceleration and quiet driving. It can also accommodate an EV mode in low-speed conditions.
For the sake of comparison, the HR-V e:HEV employs the brand's Atkinson cycle naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with the support of an electric motor. This is sent to the front wheels via an eCVT and generates a maximum power output of 129 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque.
