Industry News /22 Comments

It will be the first EV produced here.

TheChevrolet Equinoxand Blazer are set to be reborn as fully-electric SUVs with the former set to arrive in 2024 and the latter by next year. General Motors understands that this is a key segment in the EV sphere which is why it readying its first-ever electric SUVs for early release.

A new report fromZocaloreveals that Chevrolet has locked down a production line for the Equinox EV at its Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico. Not only will this be the first fully electric car set to be produced at the facility, which started operations in 1981, but it will also be the first-ever EV set to be assembled in Mexico, meaning it won't qualify for the same incentives that US-built EVs do.

Details regarding the upcoming EV are slim but we know it will be based on GM's Ultium platform and is aiming for astarting price of under $30,000. If it can achieve this pricing, it will massively undercut everything from the competition as well as the brand's very ownBolt. Chevy's decision to reimagine its Equinox into an EV is a big move for the brand considering how prevalent it is in its annual sales figures.

Acknowledging this when the car wasofficially teased to us at CESearlier this year was the brands' vice president, Steve Hill, who said, "The Equinox has always played an important role for Chevrolet as the second-highest selling brand nameplate. Providing an affordable EV option in the industry's highest-volume segment proves Chevy is going to make EVs available to everyone."

Inaugurating the highly anticipated model's arrival will be a sporty RS trim, available at launch. This will be followed by a more accessible LT model at a later date. Previously publishedteaser images and footagehave already given us something of an idea of what we can expect from the RS with its sharply styled front and rear aprons and large alloy wheel options. An optional dual-tone external color combination and distinctive LED head- and taillights as standard will help this stand out as a truly attractive EV, and if its looks match the teasers' any, then convincing existing buyers to move to the electric platform should be a little easier.
