Here's Proof Mercedes-AMG Is Cooking Up Performance EVs

Trademark filings have potentially revealed AMG's plans for the Mercedes EQ family.

TheMercedes EQEis one of several new electric vehicles that will join the German automaker's electric EQ family within the next few years. Effectively, this will be the electric equivalent of theMercedes E-Classthat will slot below the flagship EQS. Like the EQS, the EQE will be sold both as a sedan and an SUV and be underpinned by Mercedes' dedicated Electric Vehicle Architecture.

Like the combustion-powered E-Class, it appears that the EQE will get the AMG performance treatment. While the production Mercedes EQE and EQS haven't been revealed yet, new trademark filings suggest Mercedes is already preparing an army of electric AMG variants to battle BMW'sfuture electric M cars.

This week, Mercedes submitted trademark filings for the "EQE 43," "EQE 53," and "EQE 63" model names to the European Union Intellectual Property Office. Additional trademark filings were also submitted for the "EQS 53", "EQS 55", and "EQS 63." At this stage, we don't have any more details to go on, but the trademarks suggest the electric AMG EQEs will share the same model nomenclature as their combustion-powered siblings.

Technical details are still unknown, but theVision EQSutilizes two electric motors producing a combined 469 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque.

This setup enables the electric luxury sedan to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds. Topping the EQS will be the AMG EQS 63, which will have significantly more power on tap than the standard EQS. For reference, the combustion-powered AMG S63's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 generates 603 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque.

The Mercedes EQE will debut sometime in 2022, so we may have to wait until 2023 at the earliest for the AMG variants to arrive. Beyond the high-performance EQE and EQS models, reports suggest Mercedes-AMG is also cooking up aflagship EQR super SUVwith three electric motors producing a combined 1,006 hp and 996 lb-ft of torque.
