悲伤但hardly surprising.

GM's future as an all-electric automaker has been made crystal clear. The goal is for America's largest automaker's entire lineup to be fully electrified by 2035. But for now, combustion engines continue to power new vehicles, like the2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The automaker is also known for its crate engines, specifically LS V8s, which can be dropped under the hood of project cars. Sadly, one of those crate V8s is officially dead.

No formal announcement has been made, but GM has very quietly discontinued the LS7 V8 crate engine. Per the official website, the LS7 V8 page states the following at the top: "Discontinued Product. Contact dealer for availability."

In other words, if you want a new one, you'll have to rely on whatever dealership still have in stock. The LS7 is a classic 427 cubic-inch design, displacing 7.0-liters with a maximum stock output of 570 horsepower and 540 lb-ft of torque. The LS7 is part of GM's fourth-generation V8 small block series and remains one of the most powerful naturally aspirated engines out there.

Before it was regulated to crate engine duty only, it was stuffed under the hood of two great high-performance vehicles: theC6 Corvette Z06and the fifth-generationCamaro Z/28. The LS7 utilizes a cylinder block casting with pressed-in steel cylinder liners that help handle the large 4.125-inch cylinder bores.

Buyers also benefitted from the Connect & Cruise Powertrain Systems which offered factory-matched engine and transmission combinations with specifically calibrated controllers and wire harnesses to make installation easier in older vehicles. Think restomods.

The official website notes at the very bottom that the most recent rebates and offers expired on October 31, 2021 and that the rebate mail-in had to have been postmarked no later than November 30, 2021. This clearly means production and sales ceased just before the end of last year. While this should not come as a major surprise, it's still sad to see happen nonetheless. Fortunately, GM continues to sell other crate engines, such as the LT5, LT4, LT1, and LS9.
