Ford Mustang Hybrid To Keep V8 Engine

Ford has been casuallymentioning the prospect of a Mustang hybrid for several yearsnow without giving us any concrete details on what such a car could be like. Then, Ford aired a new commercial called 'The Future Is Built' where wemay have got our first glimpse of the hybrid Mustang- albeit a very dark and computer-generated image.

Afterconfirming that an all-electric and hybrid F-150 is on the way, we don't expect it to be long before Ford makes some sort of announcement to update us on the Mustang hybrid. To add further credence to this theory, a new patent from Ford outlines a "twin motor drive system for hybrid electric vehicle," mated to what appears to be a V8 engine.

Thefiling with the United States Patent and Trademark Officewas made in July of 2017 but published just this week.

A full description of the patent states: "Methods and systems are provided for a hybrid electric vehicle including a front-wheel drive system and a rear-wheel drive system. In one example, the rear-wheel drive system includes an internal combustion engine configured to drive rear wheels of the vehicle, and the front wheel drive system includes a first electric motor and a second electric motor mounted directly to opposing sides of the engine. The first electric motor is coupled to a first reduction gearbox to drive a first front wheel of the vehicle, and the second electric motor is coupled to a second reduction gearbox to drive a second front wheel of the vehicle."
