Fast & Furious fans still have a long wait for the ninth installment to arrive, asFast 9 has been delayed until 2020. To ease the wait, thefranchise's first spin-off film starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Stathamis racing into cinemas this summer. Just in time for the Superbowl this weekend, the first trailer for "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" has debuted, and it's as unapologetically over the top as you would expect.

The high stakes plot revolves around Agent Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham's character Deckard Shaw teaming up to save the world from a" cyber-genetically enhanced" supervillain calledBrixton played by Idris Elba. Fast & Furious films have always been far-fetched, but the new spin-off is entering superhero movie territory. It's hard to believe this used to be a series about illegal street racing.

While there are lots of shots showing muscly men punching each other, it wouldn't be a Fast & Furious film without some spectacular automotive action. Fortunately, it looks like Hobbs & Shaw will satisfy gearheads as the trailer shows aMcLaren 720S tearing through the streets of London while being chased by bad guys on motorbikes.

In a nice nod to the original film, the British supercar also slides under not one buttwomoving semi-trucks, so the producers haven't completely forgotten about the franchise's roots. In one destructive scene, Dwayne Johnson also takes out some modified Range Rovers by spinning a huge eight-wheeled armored truck into them. His character might as well be a superhero too, though, judging from the scene where he fearlessly jumps out of a skyscraper.

The first Fast & Furious spin-off looks like a fun ride, but early reactions suggest the lack of returning characters such as series mainstay Dominic Toretto is dividing fans. Directed by David Leitch, who also helmed Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw hits theaters on August 2. It will be the first of several planned spin-off films, as Vin Diesel recentlyhinted a female-focused Fast & Furious film is also coming.
