First-Ever S650 Mustang GT Dyno Test Shows Surprising Results

How much power does the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 really produce?

Deliveries of the 2024 Ford Mustangcommenced just last week, and Middleton Motorsports has wasted no time strapping theirMustang GT Convertibleto a dyno to determine how much power the new muscle car makes at the wheels.

During the first run, the 'Stang mustered up 398 horsepower and 352 lb-ft of torque. That's significantly less than the claimed outputs of 480 hp and 415 lb-ft. Of course, there are several explanations for this.

Firstly, even though Middleton Motorsports has added a few miles to the odometer, the Coyote V8 is still fresh and will probably need more time before it loosens up and delivers a few extra ponies. Secondly, the remainder of the deficit can be explained away by drivetrain losses. In fact, the highest number recorded (albeit with some caveats) is exactly 15% shy of the claimed horsepower figure.

The second run shows mixed results, with 408 hp and 351 lb-ft. The technician behind the wheel explains that he revved the engine under the 7,400 rpm limiter. This model is equipped with a ten-speed automatic transmission.

On the third run, the figures take a slight tumble, with figures of 405 hp and 347 lb-ft. With less than 1,000 miles on the clock, the engine and gearbox should be able to release at least ten more horsepower.

The company explains: "We were doing the pulls in this car, in fifth gear. The 1:1 ratio on the ten-speed is 7th gear. Normally, when doing dyno work on any ten-speed stuff, we're doing fifth and sixth gear. Because this is a convertible, it has a pretty low speed limiter, so we're [unable] to do a sixth-gear or seventh-gear pull."

Middleton Motorsports did manage to do a seventh-gear pull, with the Mustang showing stronger dyno results. Unfortunately, the car runs into its speed limiter at 5,600 rpm. "If we were able to dyno it in seventh [gear], we would probably see another 12 lb-ft of torque and another 15 horsepower."

Despite this, the automatic is likely to be the big seller, especially as manualscontinue to fall out of popularity. The dyno run also highlights just how incredible the revised Coyote V8 sounds. That classic American burble is still there, but thanks to the twin intake setup, it emits a more distinct rasp.

The shop plans to dyno the track-focused黑马when it arrives and has even asked Jim Farley for aMustang GTD. Powered by an 800-hp 5.2-liter supercharged V8, themost hardcore Mustang produces a growlthat would please the most demanding car gods.
