That's much faster than we were expecting.

It has been confirmed that the upcoming all-electric BMW iX2 crossover will start rolling off assembly lines in 2023.

The German BMW publicationBimmer Todayrecently spoke with Carsten Regent, head of the company's Regensburg plant, who confirmed that the company would start production of the electric car by the end of the year. The vehicle will be built alongside the iX1 electric SUV and the combustionX1and X2.

To facilitate this, the company will invest 350 million euros ($384 million) in the factory by the year's end and hire 500 new employees. The iX2 is big news for BMW. If sold in the USA, it will be Bimmer's first all-electric compact crossover offered here. It's a growing segment worth billions, and BMW definitely wants in on the action.

The Regensburg plant has been at the forefront of the company's electric push, producing electric vehicles and e-drive components. Since the fall of last year, the facility has made over 30,000 electric components, with countless more planned for the future. Hundreds of jobs have already been created thanks to the transition, with BMW saying that most are future-proofed thanks to the malleability of the facility.

As for the iX2, we still haven't seen the car uncovered, but from all of the spy shots we've seen of it and the regular X2, it will utilizea fastback crossover design, growing in size compared to the previous generation X2.

Recent comments made toCarBuzzalso lead us to believe the general styling will be a more significant departure, taking inspiration from the XMwhile offering a nicer, more refined overall experience.

Power-wise, the model will come with an xDrive30 trim featuring a dual-motor setup. Though the range remains unknown, we believe it willproduce a potent 308 horsepowerand 365 lb-ft of torque. A single-motor setup, potentially called the sDrive20, should also be part of the range and will have around 200 horses. The sole electric power unit option will likely also have the most range. We expect both cars to be capable of adding 75 miles of range in as little as 10 minutes using DC fast charging.

We expect the X2 to be unveiled soon and the iX2 alongside it. Since it's set to start rolling off the assembly line late this year, a debut must be imminent.
