Yes, sales will begin in 2018.

The production-spec BMW i8 coupe was revealed back in 2013, and went on sale the following year. The i8 Spyder concept was first shown in 2012 at Beijing, and only now have we learned when the final production ready version will have its public debut. According toAutomotive News Europe, the BMW i8 Spyder will have its official unveiling this November at the LA Auto Show, and will go on sale the following spring. BMW has yet to make an official announcement, but a couple of very recent clues indicated the upcoming reveal.

First, BMW showed a picture labeled as the 2018 i8 roadster (or Spyder) during a slideshow to investors showcasing upcoming electrified vehicles. BMW then released a brief teaser video (and images) of the car on Facebook. BMW has never said an open top version of the i8 wouldn't happen, but it was all really a matter of when. Aside from the original i8 Spyder concept, there was also the i Vision Future Interaction Concept, first shown at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show. Sources indicate the production-spec version will be "reasonably close" to the concepts. As we already found, the i8 Spyder arrives just in time because the coupe is due for a refresh.

Both variants will benefit from an extended range and additional power. What's for certain is that the i8 will continue to be a hybrid, at least for now. A complete redesign is expected in 2022, and it's likely BMW will opt for an all-electric powertrain. We'll learn more details, such as updated pricing, about the 2018 BMW i8 coupe and the new Spyder as we get closer to LA.
