Ferrari Confirms First EV Will Land In 2025

Electric Vehicles /5 Comments

Is this the beginning of the end for Ferrari's with Grammy-worthy engine notes?

Late last year, Ferrari said that it's unlikely that the company will ever have anentirely all-electric fleet. At the time, we knew that the Italian marque did, however, intend on unveiling a pure-electric vehicle by the year 2030. It seems that this timeline has been moved forward. In a statement from the chairman and acting CEO John Elkann at the company's annual general meeting, he announced that the brand would reveal its first electric car in the year 2025. Coincidentally, this is the same year that Aston Martin intends to build its ownfirst electric sports car.

Without divulging any technical details about this significant car, Elkann said that the company is "very excited about our first all-electric Ferrari that we plan to unveil in 2025. You can be sure this will be everything you dream the engineers and designers at Maranello can imagine for such a landmark in our history."

Ferrari no doubt has the expertise to develop an exciting EV, having already launched theSF90 StradaleandSF90 Spiderhybrids. Elkann described these two cars as a "wonderful technical achievement." That sounds like a fair description for a car that is the most powerful series-production Ferrari ever and can reach 62 mph in 2.5 seconds.

Fortunately for Ferrari, other elite automakers have already proven that a pure electric car can be good to drive and sell strongly. ThePorsche Taycanis a superb example of this and we expect the Audi RS e-tron GT to be just as formidable. Then again, these are still four-door sedans and Ferrari has always been about impractical but visually arresting two-door sports cars, so it remains to be seen how the company combines this ethos with an electric powertrain. For Ferrari fans, the biggest change will be adapting to a sports car without at least a V8 or V12 engine note accompanying the experience.
