Initially, only 2,000 units were planned.
TheDodge Durango SRT Hellcatis a manic SUV for someone who actually wanted a true high-performance sports car but was forced to succumb to the practicality needs of a family. Along with the latestChallenger SRT Super Stockand Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye unveiled last year, Dodge solidified its position as the horsepower king.
However, only 2,000 examples of the hottest Durango ever were planned, and in January, they werealready all spoken for. Encouragingly, it seems Dodge has now decided to build a few more units of the popular SUV. According toDodge Garage, this next batch of Durango SRT Hellcats are to be built in June, but there's no confirmation of how many more there will be.
"Any time you launch a limited-production vehicle and plan to build fewer units than the number of Dodge dealers across the country, you risk leaving a lot of customers very unhappy," acknowledged Dodge Brand Director, Bob Broderdorf. "As we finalized the production plan for this amazing SUV, we found a way to move some 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat V8 engines from other vehicles to ensure every 'sold order' in our systems will get built."
This is, of course, fantastic news for some customers who may have believed that the chance to own this SUV had passed them by. The Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat's V8 produces an astonishing 710 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque.
Despite its third row and heavy weight of over 5,700 pounds, it still saw off the likes of the Lamborghini Urus in arecent drag race. This Durango can reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds but will play the role of family hauler when it needs to, with the ability to tow up to 8,700 pounds.
It may not be the most refined SUV in the world, but its breadth of ability as a practical performance vehicle is virtually unmatched. Now, more customers will be able to experience its talents.
