Chevrolet Preparing First Silverado HD ZR2

Teaser /Comments

Here's what we think Chevrolet will include as standard.

Earlier today,Ford unveiled the detailsof the all-new2023 F-Series Super Duty. It's the go-to truck in the heavy-duty segment, but Chevrolet will try and get a bigger slice of the pie with the 2024 Silverado HD, which made its debut a day before the F-Series.

Highlights of the new Silverado HDinclude a facelift with an updated exterior and interior, a new 10-speed automatic transmission, and an optional 6.6-liter turbocharged Duramax diesel V8, which has been upgraded to produce 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque.

Chevrolet also confirmed the existence of the ZR2 off-road trim. We first heardrumors of this truck's existence in March 2022, but now it's here, and it's real, but that's just about all we know about it.

Thanks to a solitary teaser image, we know it will have a model-specific grille with a rugged black pattern and a bowtie with red inserts. We also know that Ford will offer the Tremor Package on the 2023 F-250 and F-350 models with a single rear wheel, so we expect the ZR2 trim to be available on theSilverado 2500HDand3500HD.

Ford did not say whether the Tremor Package will be available with all the engine options, but Chevrolet will need to come out of the gate swinging with its most powerful engine. The Ford now gets a 6.8-liter V8 as standard, and a new high-output version of the Power Stroke V8 diesel is available.

For that reason, we believe Chevrolet will go for the most powerful engine it has, which is the updated 6.6 Duramax. Or maybe it will stick to the proven formula, with the 6.6-liter gas V8 being standard. A gas V8 is more fun for rev-happy sideways antics, though HD customers are far more concerned with towing tools than acting like tools.

The ZR2 Off-Road Package has always been about more than speed, however. Looking at the history of Chevy's ZR2 models, they come as standard with off-road rubber andMultimatic DSSV dampersand an extra helping of ground clearance to improve approach, breakover, and departure angles.

Chevrolet also includes the necessary body cladding, off-road cut front bumper, underbody protection, and beefed-up half shafts, so owners don't need to be overly cautious off-road. Paired with the special dampers, which allow for more wheel articulation, the biggest weapons in the Silverado 1500 ZR2's arsenal are the front and rear differential lockers.

Ford's Tremor Package for the new Super Duty uses a slightly different variation of the theme, but it will likely be just as effective. It comes with off-road-tuned suspension, a Dana front axle with a limited-slip differential and axle vent tubes, 35-inch Goodyear tires, unique 18- inch wheels, Trail Control, selectable drive modes, and Trail Turn Assist.

看着雪佛兰做了什么之前,我们可以paint a reasonably accurate picture of what the HD ZR2 will be and that it appears to be a proper rival to the all-new F-Series with the Tremor Package. The most significant difference we can spot is the Ford's solid front axle, whichsome off-roaders will argue is an absolute must-have for proper off-roading. It's worth noting that Ford only unveiled preliminary specifications, so the Tremor Package might have some more tricks hidden up its metaphorical sleeve.

If the ZR2 isn't to your liking, you can also opt for the GMC Sierra HD AT4X, which hasn't been confirmed yet but is bound to happen.

Chevrolet still has time to react to whatever Ford brings to the table, as the F-Series Super Duty is scheduled to go on sale in early 2023. Silverado HD production will start in the first half of 2023.
