BMW's Leipzig Facility Celebrates 3,333,333-Vehicle Milestone

BMW's Leipzig factory has reached an incredible milestone, with the 3,333,333^rdcustomer vehicle rolling off the production line.

The car in question, a BMW 128Ti, looks resplendent in Melbourne Red metallic as it posed next to a2 Series Gran Coupeand 2 Series Active Tourer. The 1 Series isn't sold in America, but other markets are lucky enough to receive the premium hatchback. The 128Tiis a front-wheel drive hot hatchand gains motivation from a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 261 horsepower. BMW built it specifically to compete with the FWD Golf GTI in other markets.

Leipzig has been spewing out BMWs since March 2005. The inaugural vehicle was a 320i (E90), and between 2007 and 2009, the assembly facility produced 333,427 examples of the fifth-generation 3er. Leipzig's next milestone would come six years later when, in December 2011, the one-millionth car rolled off the production line.

The one-millionth car was a BMW 116d and is one of many 1 Series models that came from Leipzig.

Through the years - and across multiple body styles and three generations - the Munich-based plant has produced a staggering 1,185,052 (and counting) examples of the little BMW. Interestingly, 6,342 of those vehicles were the 1M Coupe, an exceedingly rare sports car thathas risen in value over the years.

Leipzig's two-millionth car followed in October 2016. A Protonic Blue i3 marked the occasion. Between 2013 and 2022, BMW produced 250,271 examples of its first-ever electric vehicle. Thequirky EV has since been discontinued, but the luxury automaker has expanded its offerings with the advent of the iX SUV, i7 luxury sedan, and the i4 Gran Coupe.

The three-millionth vehicle rolled off the production line just two years ago, in 2021. That vehicle was a Sunset Orange M240i. The F23 drop-top (and the F21 coupe) have since been discontinued and were replaced by the G42 Generation.
