All The Action From The 2023 Belgian F1 Grand Prix At Spa

Formula One /6 Comments

Can anyone end the Red Bull dominance? It's looking ever less likely.

Max Verstappen was a (nearly) dominant force at the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, only missing out on the fastest lap after a late pit stop from Hamilton. Still, his list of accomplishments at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps includes pole position for both the Sprint and Grand Prix, wins in both, and the fastest lap during the Sprint race (the only driver to dip below two minutes). He was also named driver of the day after he started sixth (due to a five-place gearbox penalty) and still took the W - tying him with Fernando Alonso for the most number of wins from a different starting position.

It was Red Bull's first one-two finish since the Miami Grand Prix in May and a return to form for Sergio Perez, who now seems to have found his way out of that nasty little slump.

Thanks to Red Bull's dominance this past weekend, its place at the top is all but cemented. The team has the Constructors' Championship all wrapped up with 503 points (more than double Mercedes in second place). Verstappen is officially the first driver to break into the 300s, while the rest have yet to breach 200.

As for the Belgian Grand Prix, Verstappen was followed home by Perez, Leclerc, Hamilton, and Alonso. George Russell finished in sixth, while Lando Norris maintained seventh. Considering hisrecent podium finishes, it's an odd placing, but it was an epic drive considering McLaren's high-downforce handicap. Esteban Ocon, Lance Stroll, and Yuki Tsunoda rounded off the top ten.

Despite a disastrous DNF for Oscar Piastri on the main day, he picked up second in the Sprint; McLaren's recent performance means it's in fifth place where it finished the 2022 season. The British team has now joined the triple-digit club with 103 points. Ferrari is fourth (191), slowly gaining on Aston Martin (196). Mercedes-Benz is in a solid second (247).

The teams now head into the summer break, with the Dutch Grand Prix next over the last weekend in August. There are still nearly 300 points up for grabs for the remainder of the season, and it will be interesting to see whether non-Red Bull drivers can get in on the action or if Verstappen will break his record for the most points accrued during a single season.

Highlights And Opinions

Fans were hoping for action, as Verstappen received a five-place grid penalty for going over the adjusted parts allocation. This put him behind Charles Leclerc, Sergio Perez, Lewis Hamilton, Carlos Sainz, and Oscar Piastri. He also had Lando Norris breathing down his neck.

Unfortunately, Sainz and Piastri made his job easy when the two connected going into the first corner. Piastri retired before completing a single lap, while Sainz soldiered on for a few laps until Ferrari decided to retire the car to save the engine. Verstappen picked the rest off one by one, but Perez proved to be his fiercest rival. Proving once again that it'snot just about the car, the Flying Dutchman finished 22 seconds ahead of his teammate.

Verstappen is one win away from matching Sebastian Vettel's record of nine successive wins. After the break, the Dutchie will drive in front of his home crowd, so the chances of matching that are high. After that, it's the fastest track of the season (Monza), so he'll likely break the record.

All things considered, it was a rather dull Grand Prix, and not even a smattering of rain could save it. And Lando Norris wasn't even on the podium to cause a bit of chaos.

viewership figures in sharp decline, F1 is in a precarious position. We can't argue that one team dominating is getting a bit dull, but how do you fix it? You can't penalize Red Bull, Adrian Newey, and Max Verstappen for doing a better job than the rest, but the fans demand more.

At the moment, Red Bull is competing with anAston Martin Valkyrie(also a Newey car) while the rest are in a Vantage. There's no fair way to change it, but we'd like your thoughts in the comments section below.
