The new design could debut in Alfa Romeo's new electric crossover next year.

As the EV-only era approaches, automakers have been developing new designs distinguishable from ICE cars. Over at Alfa Romeo's design board, the Italian automaker is sketching its future EVs while taking inspiration from past models.

UK publicationAutocar报道称,Alfa Romeo design boss Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos wants to incorporate the aesthetics of the brand'scars from the 1960s. He also mentioned bringing back the 'Coda Tronca' (short tail), which gave past models their design characters.

"These squared-tailed cars were innovative designs of their time, the first of which were really the Giulia SZ and TZ of the early 1960s," Mesonero-Romanos toldAutocar.

"We have to be careful how much inspiration we take from the past - as designers, a little like chefs, to mix classic ingredients into a 'new sauce' that today's generation will respond to. But the Coda Tronca will be a useful ingredient for us, and you will see it on several future models," he added.

Alfa Romeo hasn't given significant hints on what the next-gen electricGiuliaand Stelvio would look like. But based on the design chief's statements, we could see a familiar squared-off rear end, with the front fascia featuring the brand's signature Trefoil grille.

In a recent report, the upcoming Quadrifoglio-badgedGiulia EV could produce nearly1,000 horsepower. The Ferrari-sourced 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 will exit the nameplate in favor of electrification.

One car brand that prides itself on taking inspiration from the past is Hyundai. The design philosophy has been working wonders for the Korean automaker, with Hyundai's Luc Donckerwolke winning the2022 World Car Person of the Yearaward for designing the likes of the retro-lookingHyundai Ioniq 5.
