New Mercedes-AMG GT Weighs More Than A Bugatti Veyron

How can AMG's new sports car be 400 lbs heavier than a Nissan GT-R?

It's official - the2024 Mercedes-AMG GThas put on a chunk of weight and is significantly heavier than its predecessor that was already a pretty hefty sports car. This wasn't apparent during the new-generation model'sofficial US reveal last week in Monterey, as the automaker marked curb weight on its US press release as "TBA."

But the global release of the second-generation AMG GT has revealed all, with a claimed curb weight of 4,343 pounds for both GT 55 and GT 63 versions - way heavier than its predecessor's circa 3,700 lbs (model dependent).

In fact, the new AMG GT is even heavier than another 2+2 coupe, the Nissan GT-R, which is known for its porky nature. The GT-R tips the scales at 3,933 lbs after arecent facelift for 2024. That's a 410 lbs difference, and that's not as bad as it gets. The AMG GT is officially heavier than a Bugatti Veyron (4,162 lbs).

The AMG GT is also heavier than its chief rival. The Porsche 911 Turbo tips the scales at 3,635 lbs.

几个因素可能影响了AMG GT不是able weight gain. The 2+2 grand tourer gets additional (and optional) seats at the back, plus Mercedes-Benz made it more luxurious and feature-packed. The additional tech niceties could only mean additional weight. To be fair, the automaker tried to reduce weight by usinglightweight forged aluminumfor its damping system, translating to lighterunsprung and semi-sprung weight.

There are also other differences, like the fact that this AMG GT has AWD, something the original never did. We also know that electronics-heavy architectures are driving vehicle weights up, which was something BMW M Boss Frank van Meel toldCarBuzzlast year. Mercedes is likely afflicted by this same phenomenon with a raft of computer systems and sensors for all the safety nonsense on board. Still, that figure is hard to digest.

This is likely a key contributing factor to the AMG GT's sluggish performance claims. While it has more power and torque than a Porsche 911 Turbo, at least in AMG GT 63 guise, it's four-tenths of a second slower to 60 mph.

Part of that comes down to weight balance, as the 911's rear-mounted engine gives it strong grip from a dig, but the AMG also has 708 lbs extra to lug around - equivalent to an extra three-and-a-half adult American males riding shotgun.

The 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque in the current top-spec GT 63, matching the old AMG GT R for power and seeing an increase of 74 lb-ft.

We all know that torque matters, but the new car has to carry 7.4 lbs per lb-ft of torque, whereas the old AMG GT R only had to haul 7.1 lbs/lb-ft.

Can the new car's active anti-roll systems and all-wheel drive negate the added heft? That's something we'll only be able to say for sure when we drive it. If the AMG GT follows the same path as the SL with which it shares a platform, a four-pot hybrid might come along at a later date, but we don't think any potential weight savings (if the 43 even materializes) will offset the loss of character.
