2024 Aston Martin DB12 Volante Unveiled As Drop-Top 671-HP Super GT

Most convertibles, especially those based on coupes, often have compromised lines due to the folding roof.

The DB12 Volante gets around this with a cleverly packaged K-fold fabric roof mechanism, which stows away neatly without compromising the styling. The two-stage folding system stacks the roof at just 10.2 inches high in its stowed position. Not only does this benefit the aesthetics, but it operates with greater ease and provides exceptional cargo space for this class. There are eight layers of insulation to keep wind noise out when closed. It takes 14 seconds to retract and 16 seconds to deploy at speeds of up to 31 mph, and can be operated via the keyfob when parked. A black cloth top is standard, but customers can also choose between red, blue, and a 'black and silver' finish.

Sleek styling makes for a design that is equal parts aggressive and elegant. Up front, the gaping Aston Martin grille and hood bulges allude to the power from the twin-turbo V8. The design may seem like a rehash of the DB11, but it's an adaptation of that car's design, and many of the key points have been adjusted, which is why there are shorter overhangs and a longer wheelbase.

The reworked interior is a wonderful place to spend time and is trimmed in the finest leather upholstery, which is uplifted by wood veneer or carbon fiber inlays.

DB12 models are the first Aston Martin models to use the brand'slatest infotainment system. Designed from the ground up, the DB12 eschews the aging Mercedes-based COMAND system in older models. The touchscreen measures 10.25 inches and offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with in-built satellite navigation that has 3D mapping and provides live traffic updates.

If you'd rather not listen to the grumbly V8, the DB12 Volante offers a superb listening experience thanks to the standard Bowers & Wilkins 390-watt sound system with eleven speakers. An optional 15-speaker 1,170-watt surround sound system, with 3D headline speakers, a subwoofer, and aluminum double dome tweeters, should appeal to even the most discerning music lovers.

Despite the high-tech approach, plenty of old-world charm can be enjoyed here. Aston Martin has retained physical buttons for the main controls, such as the gear selection, climate settings, and drive modes. We're relieved that the Gaydon-based brand has kept tactile controls, making navigating the myriad toys easier and retaining an upmarket feel.

Q by Aston Martin is, naturally, available, allowing customers to create true one-of-a-kind motorcars. "The Volante name holds a special place in Aston Martin's history," said Marek Reichman, Chief Creative Officer for the brand. "Since the first Volante was introduced back in 1965, huge strides have been made in engineering, technology, and performance."

The DB12 Volante will be officially unveiled at Monterey Car Week and displayed at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. Production of the new drop-top will kick off in the third quarter of 2023, with deliveries starting towards the end of the year. Aston Martin hasn't announced the pricing details, but, as the adage goes, if you have to ask... However, we estimate $265k is the lowest you'd be able to get one for without any form of customization.
