2022 Honda Passport Debuts Rugged TrailSport Off-Roader

Reveal /9 Comments

A wider track and standard AWD have improved its on-dirt abilities.

A few weeks ago, Hondateased the new Passport TrailSportas a more capable, rugged version of its already-capable SUV. This won't be the last TrailSport-badged Honda to be launched but the Passport TrailSport serves as a glimpse of what we can expect in the future. The new model coincides with the arrival of the 2022Honda Passport. What's immediately noticeable is the Passport TrailSport's more aggressive appearance. Bolder bumpers, a unique grille treatment, and bespoke machined 18-inch wheels speak to the off-road intentions of the new SUV. TrailSport badges in orange are further telltale signs that set this model apart.

The Passport TrailSport is more than a cosmetic package, however. It starts with front/rear tracks that have been widened by 10 mm and a ground clearance that now stands at 8.2 inches. The brand's i-VTM4 torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system with Intelligent Traction Management is standard. In frosty conditions, the heated windshield wipers will come in handy. On tighter trails, the exterior mirrors can electrically be folded to prevent them from getting damaged. Although these changes aren't going to see the TrailSport hunting down aLand Rover Defenderoff-road, it's certainly better positioned to get its boots dirty than the standard Passport. Honda says that the next few model years will introduce further upgrades like off-road-tuned suspension and chunkier tires, although the standard items are already beefier with sidewall tread for added grip and style.

Inside, the Passport TrailSport has orange contrast stitching and all-season rubber floor mats. Amber ambient lighting and a black chrome gauge surround are among the other changes.

Like other Passports, the TrailSport comes with Honda's familiar 3.5-liter V6 engine which produces 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Towing capacity is rated at 5,000 lbs.

"Some may not realize the true rugged, off-road capabilities of our light trucks," said Dave Gardner from Honda. "Now they're getting tough, rugged looks to match, and the addition of TrailSport will further enhance theoff-road capability我们的汽车在未来。”

Elsewhere in the lineup, the 2022 Passport benefits from revised exterior styling from the A-pillars forward. There is a new hood with a bold power bulge, the grille has a new upright design, and the front fenders are new. There is also a range of new alloy designs. At the back, there is a new rear bumper and the size of the exhaust finishers has increased. The EX-L has an enhanced interior with perforated stitching for the leather seats. A rear-seat reminder and a rear seatbelt reminder system are standard across the lineup, and Honda Performance Development (HPD) accessories are available. HPD parts include a special grille and black fender flares.

Pricing is yet to be revealed but the 2022 Honda Passport will make its way to dealerships this winter. We expect theTrailSport-badgedlineup to expand to other Honda models like theRidgeline.
