2022 BMW 2 Series Looks Great In The Metal

Just a few days after its online reveal, the all-new second-generation2022 BMW 2 Seriesmade its global debut at the2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Shown in 220d and M240i guises, the new 2 Series looks simply stunning in the metal.

Compared to its predecessor, the new 2 Series is larger, wider, and more muscular, giving it plenty of presence at the First Glance Paddock. The M240i's flared fenders accentuate the sports coupe's sporty stance, while the redesigned headlights are a homage to the BMW 2002. Unlike the 4 Series, its sensibly sized kidney grilles shouldn't attract any controversy. This time, it's the more aggressive rear end that's dividing opinions.

So far, BMW has only shown off the new 2 Series in Melbourne Red, Alpine White, and a new Thundernight Metallic purple finish, but the two models showcased at Goodwood were finished in Brooklyn Gray and Portimao Blue. We particularly like the Portiamao Blue finish. Thankfully, the new 2 Series retains everything we love about its predecessor: slick, compact coupe styling, a rear-wheel-drive setup, and a potent straight-six engine.

With a near 50:50 weight distribution and a 12-percent increase in torsional rigidity, the new 2 Series is better balanced, which should make it even more fun to drive. That's no small feat considering that the old 2 Series is regarded as one of BMW's best driver's cars in recent years. To show off its improved agility, the new 2 Series stormed up the famous Goodwood Hillclimb.
