AMG boosts revamped C43 sedan to nearly 400 horsepower

Aftergiving the 2019 Mercedes C-Class a mild refresh, the more potent, warmed-over AMG C43 has arrived. At first glance, the 2019 AMG C43 looks identical to the outgoing model, but it features improved performance and an array of design updates. Mercedes says the exterior is "considerably more expressive," distinguished by AMG's signature twin louvre grille in matte iridium silver and a new sculpted front bumper with horizontal strakes for each air vent. Side air curtains in the front bumper also help optimize front air flow.

At the back are two round twin tailpipes finished in high-gloss chrome instead of the outgoing model's angular exhaust outlets. These flank a more aggressive rear diffuser for improved rear air flow. A sleek trunk lip spoiler aids the diffuser and lends a sportier look to the sedan. An optional AMG styling package also helps the sedan stand out by highlighting some of the exterior elements in high-gloss black. Other exterior changes include modified LED headlights, taillights, and new wheel designs. In the U.S., the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 is available with lightweight 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels, which were optimized in a wind tunnel.

This helped improve air flow around the wheels and increase aerodynamic efficiency thanks to bespoke aero rings and spoke geometry. Under the hood lies an upgraded twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Larger turbochargers have been installed to increase the output by 23 horsepower to 385 at 6,100 rpm. Peak torque remains the same at 384 lb-ft at 2,500 rpm. This upgrade enables the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 to hit 0-62 mph in around 4.6 seconds, but top speed remains at an electronically limited 130 mph.

Inside, the AMG C43 is loaded with technology, including a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster with selectable Classic, Sport or Supersport viewing modes. A 10.25-inch infotainment system is also equipped as standard, along with a new flat-bottomed AMG steering wheel finished in Nappa leather. Optional AMG Performance seats with added bolstering, integrated head restraints, and three levels of ventilation when spec'd with leather trim. "As the most successful model series for Mercedes-AMG, the C-Class family in all its facets has made a major contribution to our corporate success," said Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

"One major component in this success story was the implementation of the 43-series of models, which have thrilled our customers worldwide since the market launch in 2015. The high demand and positive feedback have encouraged us to sharpen up not only the appearance of the facelift, but also its performance, efficiency and sportiness in true AMG style." The 2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 Sedan will make its world debut at the Geneva tomorrow before arriving in American dealerships by the end of the year. As usual, a wagon version will be available in Europe, but only the sedan will be available in the U.S.
