This low-mileage model is considered by some experts to be the most prestigious M1 currently available.

This flawless andhighly valued BMW M1, considered by many experts in the classics industry to be the finest example of the 453 units ever produced, will be going under the hammer without reserve in Munich next month as part of the Bavarian Legends Collection. This particular model has just over 39,500 miles on the clock, but more impressive than that is its close ties to the BMW brand.

It was commissioned by the head of the BMW M1 project, Jochen Neerpasch, with a unique factory specification. It is only one of four models to be finished in gray with brown leather upholstery for the interior. Once Neerpasch started a career at International Management Group, he decided to let go of his prized possession which he tells RM Sotheby's is one of the biggest mistakes he has made in his life. We can expect this one to sell for a bit more thanPaul Walker's pristine exampleauctioned off last year.

It is understood that this model was purchased by Reinhard Kleissler who is a specialist of the model and co-founder of the official BMW M1 Club. Kleissler claims that he purchased the car with just under 15,000 miles on the clock. Interestingly, he decided to have the car repainted to factory specification by Dachau's Walter Maurer who was previously commissioned for several BMW art cars.

Kleissler sold the car in 2013 to a collector who took the model to Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este where it won the prestigious Trofeo ASI award for the best-preserved post-war car. After winning this prize, Kleissler repurchased the car, preserving it in his private collection at an automotive museum. Since it has been standing for almost a decade, whoever purchases this car with the intention to drive it will have to conduct some considerable mechanical repairs.

For those not fully aware of the BMW M1's history, it was the only car fully developed by the M division before the arrival of the controversialBMW XMSUV. This homologated race car constructed with the help of Lamborghini and penned by the great Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign was put together to take on the dominant Porsche 911.

It is powered by a unique hand-build M88 naturally aspirated 3.5-liter straight-six gas engine designed by the late Paul Rosche who is considered to be the heart and soul of BMW M since its inception. The road-legal version of this engine was detuned to produce 273 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque,但在Procarit could deliver a whopping 464 hp. All road-going models were fitted with a dog-leg five-speed manual transmission, exclusively.
