2023 Lamborghini Urus S First Look Review: The Urus Evolves

First Look /Comments

Lamborghini adds more power and aggression to its super SUV.

Thesuper SUV segment has explodedsince Lamborghini unveiled the Urus at the end of 2017. New players that have been introduced since then include theAston Martin DBX707, the BMW XM, Porsche's Cayenne Turbo GT, and theFerrari Purosangue. They all seek to provide a seemingly conflicting combination of practicality and supercar performance, but Lamborghini is keen to remind everyone what it's capable of with the more powerful, quicker, and aggressively styled Urus S. It still has a twin-turbocharged V8 but now makes a devilish 666 CV, or 657 horsepower - a marginal increase over the standard Urus, but the same outputs found on the track-focused Performante edition. The automaker notes it's the successor to the original Urus, combining the Performante's outputs with the classier, more practical look of the original.

When Is The Lamborghini Urus S Coming Out?

A specific release date for the Lamborghini Urus S wasn't mentioned by the automaker, but we expect it to be coming out before the end of 2022 or possibly early in 2023.

2023 Lamborghini Urus S Price And Competition?

A US-specific price for the 2023 Lamborghini Urus S remains unknown, but in Europe, it begins at a cost of 195,538 Euros excluding tax. At current exchange rates, that translates to a price of approximately $193,000 in the USA. However, the regular base Urus - which the new Urus S replaces - carried an MSRP of over $225,000, so you're likely to pay at least $230,000 for the updated SUV.

Rivals include the $236,000 Aston Martin DBX707, which has even more power, along with the $188,700 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. The new Ferrari Purosangue sports a V12 and an enormous estimated price of $400,000, so the Urus S is almost a bargain by comparison.

New Lamborghini Urus S Exterior And Colors

Although not a total redesign, there is much that's new for the exterior of the Lamborghini Urus S. Both bumpers are refreshed, with the one in front featuring a new matt black-painted stainless steel skidplate. Think of this as decorative rather than the protective skidplates adorning rugged Jeeps and Land Rovers - this still isn't an SUV ideally suited to off-roading.

Also new is a lightweight carbon fiber painted hood with matt black air vents, but these vents can be optionally finished in shiny carbon fiber, the same color as the body, or gloss black. At the back, there is a matt black-painted lower section with a new twin-pipe exhaust design in brushed steel. Wheels measure 21 inches in size, but new options include 22-inch Nath rims with a titanium matt and diamond polish finish, or 23-inch Taigete wheels with bronze and diamond polish options.

This is a widely customizable car, and Lamborghini says that there are more colors, style packages, and trims than before. For instance, there are five style configuration options and you can add a visible carbon fiber roof. The standard brushed steel exhaust tips can be replaced by matt, shiny black, or bright chrome alternatives.

This focus on customization extends to the colors of the Lamborghini Urus S. Via the configurator, we could choose from Giallo Inti (yellow), Blu Eleos (blue), Grigio Keres (black), Rosso Mars (red), Verde Mantis (green), and many more. That's before delving into the Ad Personam palette with both matt and shiny shades. Shiny ones include Bronzo Hypnos (bronze) and Blu Uranus, while the smaller matt palette comes with options like Bianco Phanes (white), New Grigio Nimbus Matt (silver), and New Blu Eleos Matt.

Brake caliper colors for the 2023 Urus S include silver, black, green, orange, red, and yellow. Perhaps the most challenging part of acquiring the Urus S for wealthy customers will be deciding how to specify it initially.

Lamborghini Urus S Dimensions

The dimensions of the Lamborghini Urus S are largely similar to the model it replaces. Its length is 201.25 inches, but the carbon upgrade increases that slightly to 202.24 inches. With the mirrors, the SUV's width is a substantial 85.87 inches, while the height is 64.48 inches. This hulk of an SUV rides on a 118.22-inch wheelbase.

At 4,844 pounds, the curb weight of the new Lamborghini Urus S SUV is just a few pounds lighter than before, but because it has more power, the power-to-weight ratio has gone up.

Lamborghini Urus S Engine And Performance

It may not have the Purosangue's V12, but the engine in the Lamborghini Urus S is still a special one. The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 has been tuned to deliver 657 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, matching the more extremeUrus Performante. Those specs are an improvement over the previous base Urus, which made 641 hp, although torque stays the same.

With all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Urus S will go from 0-62 mph in 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 190 mph. The 0-124 mph time is 12.5 seconds - a second slower to that mark than the Performante, as the Urus S is over 100 lbs heavier.

Lamborghini says the exhaust system has been retuned for a more distinct start-up sound and a more thrilling note in each drive mode. Speaking of drive modes, those are Strada, Sport, Corsa, and Ego. There are also three off-road drive selectors: Terra, Neve, and Sabbia.

With an active torque vectoring rear differential, the Urus S is once again expected to be one of the most agile, engaging SUVs to drive, regardless of whether others are quicker. At the high speeds it is capable of, customers will appreciate the carbon-ceramic brake discs. The Urus S can come to a complete stop from 62 mph in about 110 feet.

Gas Mileage

兰博基尼声称野牛年代将消耗14.1 liters of gas per 100 km, which translates to around 16.7 mpg combined. That's based on the WLTP cycle, though. The 2023 Urus Performante with the same engine has EPA-rated gas mileage of 14/19/16 city/highway/combined, but it is lighter. The regular 2022 Urus returned 12/17/14 mpg, and that's more in line with what we expect from the Urus S when its mpg ratings are confirmed.

With a 22.45-gallon gas tank, the Urus S should have a range of about 314 miles.

Lamborghini Urus S Interior And Cargo

The interior of the Lamborghini Urus S has been on the receiving end of fully-revised color and trim offerings. It's still one of the sportiest SUV cabins you'll find anywhere, with the sense of occasion inside that only a Lamborghini seems to be able to muster. Bi-color Sportivo and a Bi-color Sophisticated option come with a stitching pattern borrowed from the Urus Performante.

With the Sophisticated option, the seats in the Lamborghini Urus S are finished in black leather with various contrast color options to choose from. Other leather color choices in each row include Marrone Elpis and Grigio Octans, with contrast stitching in choices such as Rosso Alala (red), Giallo Taurus (yellow) and Verde Fauns (green). Alcantara upholstery is also available.

Connected navigation and smartphone integration are available, and there is a Remote Park function. Ahead of the driver is the familiar digital gauge cluster with the rev counter taking up prime position in the center. As an option, customers can specify a 21-speaker advanced 3D Bang & Olufsen sound system, and there is also a Lamborghini Sensonum sound system with 17 speakers.

Advanced driver-assist aids are available via a package, with sensors to pick up hazards ahead of the driver and in blind-spot zones, and there is also a highway assistant and night vision.

At 21.8 cubic feet, the Lamborghini Urus S' trunk space is nothing amazing for an SUV of this size, but it's also the most practical Lambo you can buy by far.
