Will Audi Add Plug-In Hybrid A6, A8 and Q7?

Diesels just don't seem to be cutting it in the emissions game.

With the A3 Sportback E-Tron due for production next year, and with Audi's R8-based electric looking more and more realistic, now rumors have it that the next-generation Q7 SUV will be the next plug-in Audi we'll be hearing about. Speaking to Indian Autos Blog, head of Audi's research and design, Dr. Ulrich Hackenbers, said the Q7 will be the company's pioneer model in hybrid land. Moreover, it seems that the next A6 and A8 will also offer plug-in models.

So far, Audi has been late to the hybrid game, focusing its attention instead on efficient diesel-powered models offered on most of its lineup, at least in Europe. But to keep up with the emission-cutting efforts displayed by all of its competitors, the company feels compelled to catch up and get charging - quickly. According to IAB, the recent replacement of Audi's research and design boss, Wolfgang Durheimer, was directly related to his conservatism in this area.
