Whipple Launches Supercharger For GM's 6.6-Liter V8

Tuning /Comments

It's a big improvement over the naturally aspirated engine, bringing with it 700 lb-ft of torque.

Whipple Superchargers has announced that its 3.0-liter supercharger system for the 6.6-liter (L8T) V8 is now available to order. This V8 gas engine produces 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque in stock form and is standard fitment on General Motors' Heavy Duty pickups like theGMC Sierra 2500 HDand 3500 HD.

增压器is legal in all 50 states, and it boosts the torque by an additional 236 lb-ft for a grand total of 700. Whipple didn't provide a horsepower figure, but we expect it to be north of 500 horses if its previous products are used as an indication. In any case, most HD owners will be interested in torque, and thanks tohow a supercharger works, the power delivery is more immediate and linear than turbocharging.

In short, having 700 lb-ft from low down in the rev range will be a massive benefit to those whotow and haulregularly.

The new system uses Whipple's fifth-generation twin-screw supercharger, aluminum high-flow intake manifold, billet idler plate and adjustable idler system, and a complete intercooler system. The latter is an oversized air-to-water bar-and-plate with billet aluminum tanks and high-density fins. Whipple also includes a dual-pass heat exchanger to keep things cool under heavy loads. According to Whipple, this unique system offers "better acceleration and less than [one horsepower] of consumption during cruising for excellent fuel economy."

Each system is finished in a standard textured black, but Whipple says it can be ordered in nearly any custom color. The kit is also sold with an HP Tuners RDT flash tool, which can be used as a data logger and for tire/axle adjustment.

For an additional $1,000, you can also add the Global A E93 PCM Upgrade and RDT Tool, including full support from HP Tuners. If you opt for the cheaper package, you'll get a voucher from Whipple for the required PCM upgrade from HP Tuners.

The system costs $7,495, plus $1,000 if you want the HP Tuners tool mentioned above. If you want to add color or contrast, you're looking at $500-$1,500 extra.

It's a lot of cash but still cheaper than the roughly $10,000 required to upgrade a GM HD model from the 6.6-liter gas V8 to the 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8. Still, with the diesel, you get 445 hp and a whopping 975 lb-ft of torque. That makes it thetop choice for towing and hauling.
